Mumbai’s Drum Camp Returns With Virtual Edition This August
Ace drummers Darshan Doshi, Gino Banks, Jai Row Kavi and Karun Kannampilly will conduct 18 hours of lessons across three days
Following the inaugural edition of workshop series Drum Camp, Mumbai-based hosts Drum House (founded by Karun Kannampilly, from rock band The Koniac Net) have decided not to let the pandemic prevent them from keeping a good thing going.
Virtual Drum Camp 2020, which takes place from August 14th to 16th, brings back co-founders and ace drummers Darshan Doshi, Gino Banks and Jai Row Kavi for 18 hours of lessons as well as one-on-one sessions.
Kannampilly says in a statement, “Although students won’t be able to experience an outdoor camp this year, they will still have access to some of the best educators in India – getting an insight into their personal studio spaces, access to a virtual ‘Drummers Hang’ and of course, tons of educational resources to carry them through until Drum Camp 2021. They will also have the opportunity to collaborate on a challenging drum ensemble piece as part of their final performance.”
Doshi notes that all the drummers had been getting a good reception for online drum classes, which bolstered their thoughts about taking Drum Camp online. He says that the camp structure will be similar, even though classes take place via Zoom call. Doshi adds, “Each teacher will have a multi-cam setup with great sounding drums. We have divided the class rooms on zoom into three sections with 12 to 13 students per room so that the teachers gets to also check out what the students are playing. It’s kind of more personal than having 40 students in one room.”
