Dongri meets Noida as rappers Munawar Faruqui and Spectra team up for the celebratory song “Dhandho,” produced by Sez on the Beat.
Winner of the reality show Bigg Boss in season 17 earlier this year, Faruqui’s verses show his ease and confidence with his status, while Spectra – a finalist on hip-hop show MTV Hustle 2.0 – recounts his journey to earning fame while staying focused on his craft.
Faruqui adds in a statement, “I’m thrilled to share ‘Dhandho’ with the world, a song that embodies the raw energy of the streets. The song is about power and is out and out underground hip-hop. Collaborating with Spectra is always special and I hope that everyone enjoys our song as much as we do.”
With the title originating from the Gujarati word for business, “Dhandho” sees Faruqui pack in references to blockbusters like Animal, The Godfather actor Marlon Brando, and doubles down on his love for the rose-flavored beverage Rooh Afza. In the music video directed jointly by Faruqui and Paritosh Anand, there’s a fun-loving side to the rappers, although there are a few overused visual cues – like the collective masked figures bobbing their heads, first seen in Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble.”
At other times, Faruqui and Spectra are seen riding through the streets and sitting down for chai at a local bakery. The pair have previously collaborated on hit songs like “Nagpada Ka Rider,” “Behtareen” and “Dus Lakh.”
A press release for the song adds, “‘Dhandho’ marks the reunion of Munawar Faruqui and Spectra after four years, celebrating their journey as self-made musicians and their success in the industry. Meanwhile, the song’s video beautifully captures the essence of Mumbai’s streets, showcasing various parts of the city and its people.”
Released via Warner Music India, the music video for “Dhandho” also ends with an announcement of Faruqui’s international tour. More details, including cities, dates and whether Spectra will be joining the artist on tour, are yet to be announced.
Spectra, for his part, previously released his single “75 Hard” in March. Sez on the Beat has also had a few able assists in Indian rap in 2024 so far, including “Doon” with Karma and Panther’s album Flying Towards The City.
