The pop artists pay homage to the city with a vibrant video, with music by DJ LYAN and producer collective The Indian Connect’s Aman Moroney and Zaiyd Patni, among others

DESI TRILL’s latest release “Mumbai Magic” gathers bankable pop artists like Natania and Shalmali along with Hindi-English singer-songwriter Subhi for an anthem and ode to the metropolis. The song marks the first release from theand movement’s upcoming EP DESI TRILL presents… Brown Is Everywhere, slated to be out on May 10th.
The video presents a classic conundrum of a Mumbaikar and how they adapt (with a healthy bit of narrative freedom in the mix) to reach their destination in the midst of a traffic jam. Natania’s distinctive hook invokes localities like Kalina, Chowpatty and Colaba while playing up local Mumbaiyya vocabulary, while Subhi leads with an emphatic, Bollywood-esque vocal melody in her hooks. Shalmali adds a punchy (even if brief) few lines to the song, which goes over a club-ready, euphoric sound crafted by DESI TRILL’s DJ LYAN (who produced the title song and the label’s debut offering “Desi Trill” last year) and music collective The Indian Connect.
Natania says in her statement about the song, “Mumbai Magic’ is a song about the adrenaline rush that Mumbai gives you and the home you always find in it. It’s about the one of a kind city filled with dream chasers, traffic, passion and all heart. Growing up in Mumbai shaped me into the person I am today and I can’t wait to share that with the rest of the world.”
Subhi adds in her statement, “Mumbai is for dreamers and I am one such dreamer. It’s the ‘Khwaabo ka shehar’. I have seen people come to Mumbai from all walks of life trying to find themselves. The city helped me discover who I am and find my true potential. Mumbai ka magic is real!”
Shalmali, who lends star power to the track, says, “‘Mumbai Magic’ hits the Mumbai nerve like no other. The lyrics of the song is a true reflection of the finer details of the city – the rickshaws, the chaiwalas, the traffic, the chaos!”
In addition to this track, the six-song Brown is Everywhere EP will include songs by artists including Delhi NCR-based Nigerian rapper Yung Sammy, Indian-origin artists like DJ LYAN, MUMZY, singer-songwriters Naisha, Natania and Subhi.
DESI TRILL was started in September last year by Roc Nation co-founder TY-TY Smith and U.K.’s Shabz Naqvi from the So Solid Crew, partnering with Universal Music Group for the launch of a South Asian-focused sound and label.
