Following the slow reopening of venues across India, one of the country’s long-standing home for performances — National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai — will also kickstart music, theater and stand-up comedy starting February 3rd.
Since the end of March 2020, the NCPA has hosted several digital performances and dove into its archival concert footage for livestreams owing to the pandemic. Next month will see performances at the Experimental Theatre, short film screenings at the Godrej Dance Theatre and plays and concerts at the Tata Theatre.
There’s an opening concert on February 3rd by the resident Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI)’s Chamber Orchestra who will perform Vivaldi’s Concerto for four violins, works by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and more. They’ll then be joined by Soul Yatra — saxophonist Rhys Sebastian, pianist Merlin Dsouza, bassist Saurabh Suman and drummer Jehangir Jehangir for a set comprising “popular music and jazz standards,” according to an event description. Also coming up in February is actor Pratik Gandhi (fresh off his portrayal of stockbroker Harshad Mehta in web series Scam 1992) leading a production of the play Mohan’s Masala. On February 13th, a tribute night for pop, soul, jazz and rock called The Golden Years will take place at the Experimental Theatre, featuring vocalists Darren Das and Giselle Pinto along with The Sixth Sense.
NCPA chairman Khushroo N Suntook, Chairman, NCPA, said in a statement that their present focus is on “creating quality performances featuring local artistes and resident musicians of the SOI.” Of course, with the pandemic still being a concern across the country and the globe, the chairman added that they are “thoroughly prioritizing hygiene at the NCPA.” He added, “We’ve made sure that all venues, green rooms and washrooms are sanitized and have kept temperature and oxygen-level checks upon entry for the safety of our audience.”
