Straddling rock and metal across eras, Pune rock band Nemophilis’ new song “Paralyzed” turns up the heat with a music video that shows a wild sexual encounter.

Directed by Vidhi Shah and shot and edited by Habeel Bakshi, the “Paralyzed” music video ups Nemophilis’ storytelling in their first release after over a year. Bandleader Kshitij Kumar says, “The lyrics of this track are quite explicit, even though they do not contain any profanities. We steered away from the topics that we usually write about and wrote about (an allegedly fictional) sexual encounter between two individuals who were never meant to be together in the first place, their thoughts, feelings and love/hate relationship within each other are spoken about very loudly.”

The visuals then had to mirror the band’s lyrics for “Paralyzed” and Shah and Bakshi serve just that purpose. Kumar says of Shah, “She understands well that there’s a very thin line between vulgar and sexy, so she went the extra mile with our DOP Habeel Bakshi to get the shots how they were intended to be taken, and with the help of our cast and crew, this video was made possible.”

While they’ve been known for nu-metal tribute shows for bands like Linkin Park, Nemophilis have been writing and releasing their own music since 2019. “Paralyzed” introduces a modern edge to the band that’s previously put out power ballads and Eighties-inspired tunes. The band is completed by bassist Saurabh Lodha (also part of thrash metallers Kasck) and drummer Akarsh Singh.

The song is boosted by a guitar solo from Aditya Swaminathan (from thrash band Kill The King and currently part of extreme metallers Demonic Resurrection). Kumar says anyone hearing them for the first time will have an idea of what to expect from their upcoming debut album The Iceberg.

There are eight songs on the album which “border on the edge of where rock ends and metal begins.” Kumar adds, “We believe we’ve crafted a sound that has never been heard before, pleasing both metal and rock fans alike. Ranging from soft rock to nu metal, fans can expect the start of a whole new era for Nemophilis and the Indian rock music scene with the versatility we bring in the record.” The album will be released in May.
