New Daft Punk Doc Will Feature Kanye West, Pharrell Williams

Giorgio Moroder, Michel Gondry and more help explore electronic group's two-decade career in BBC Worldwide France film

Daft Punk‘s mystique ”” the robot masks, the disinterest in interviews ”“ has been intertwined in their persona since they formed in 1993. Now BBC Worldwide France is shedding some unexpected light on the French electronic duo with the new documentary Daft Punk Unchained, which explores the two-decade journey of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo.

The doc, directed by Hervé Martin Delpierre and co-written with Marina Rozenman, tells the Daft Punk story using archival interview footage from 1996 to 2013, “rare documents” and exclusive interviews with friends and collaborators, including Kanye West (who recruited the group to co-produce four songs on his 2013 LP, Yeezus), Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Paul Williams and Todd Edwards, all of whom contributed to Daft Punk’s 2013 album, Random Access Memories.

The doc will also feature interviews with “Around the World” video director Michel Gondry, Peter Lindbergh, Leiji Matsumoto, Tony Gardner, Pedro Winter and Pete Tong.

Daft Punk Unchained will, as BBC notes, “plunge us into the unique world of the Robots,” recounting the duo’s “quest for liberty and independence” from their mid-Nineties breakthrough in Paris to their triumph at the 2014 Grammys, where they won Album of the Year for Random Access Memories and Record of the Year for the Pharrell-assisted “Get Lucky,” along with three other awards. The film will feature an original theme, “Unchained Theme,” composed and arranged by Joseph Trapanese, who worked with Daft Punk on their Tron: Legacy score.

Daft Punk Unchained will premiere June 24th at 8:50 p.m. on Canal+ in France. It will be distributed internationally by BBC Worldwide.
