From Salim–Sulaiman's contemporary fusion on ‘Skater Girl’ to Hari Madras’ ambient approach with ‘Bloom’ and Shalmali Kholgade’s folksy pop on ‘June’
Skater Girl
Sibling composer duo Salim and Sulaiman Merchant aka Salim–Sulaiman helmed duties to score the coming-of-age sports drama film Skater Girl. The seasoned brothers capture the mood of the motion picture quite exceptionally, bringing in their immense experience. The pair set out to retain flavors from Rajasthani music while adding in contemporary elements as heard on the riveting “Maari Chhalangein” featuring vocalist Sharvi Yadav and on the exhilarating “Shine On Me” that includes singer-rapper Raja Kumari.
Bloom
Accompanying a love story that is set in Chennai during the 2020 pandemic on independent film Bloom, this hauntingly beautiful instrumental soundtrack has been composed by musician Hari Madras Rengarajan. The artist delivers an ambient touch to the songs while dabbling with electronic soundscapes too. The 10 tracks include meditative escapes (“Big Bang” and “Sundowner”), jazztronica (“Doobie Muse”), a string of melancholic selections (“Video Love,” “Contemplation” and “Reality vs Fiction”), piano-aided tunes (“Strangers in Paradise” and “Bloom”) as well as a jacked-up electro reprised version of “Sundowner.”
June
Playback singer Shalmali Kholgade marks her debut as a composer on the Marathi film June. Assisted by some stellar lyricism from Jitendra Joshi and Nikhil Mahajan as well as poignant guitaring by Roland Fernandes, Kholgade not only shines as a composer but also delivers on all fronts as a vocalist. The soundtrack features the moodiness of “Baba” before we’re treated to the ballad “Ha Vaara.” The penultimate song is the dreamy “Paar Geli” as the OST closes with a reprised acoustic guitar version of “Baba.”
