New Sam Smith Bond Theme Video Reveals ‘Spectre’ Footage

"Writing's on the Wall" clip highlights agent's interaction with Bond girls

Sam Smith’s elegant, sumptuous theme song for the upcoming James Bond film Spectre now has a video of equal caliber.

The singer released the Luke Monaghan-directed clip Sunday night, interspersing scenes from Spectre with Smith belting out the track in similarly exotic locales. The video doesn’t give too much away about the film, but shows Bond (Daniel Craig) interacting with Bond girls Monica Bellucci and Léa Seydoux. Smith was set to unveil the video on Sunday afternoon, but was forced to delay the release. “I’m so sorry about this, guys,” he tweeted. “Trust me, it’s worth it. A lot of angry emails going round. What a nightmare.”

The unveiling of the video on Monday morning (GMT time) was no accident, as October 5th marks both Global James Bond Day and the 53rd anniversary of the theatrical release of the first Bond film Dr. No.

Smith debuted the 24th official Bond theme on September 25th, co-writing the track with Jimmy Napes, his songwriting partner for the Grammy-winning “Stay With Me.” Smith is the first British male vocalist to sing a Bond theme since Tom Jones’ contribution of “Thunderball” in 1965.

“I tried to put myself in the shoes of Bond,” the singer told NPR. “My music is a diary and it’s a recap of my life, and I wanted to bring that kind of honesty. In the lyrics ”¦ I wanted a touch of vulnerability from Bond, where you see into his heart a little bit.”

Adele took home an Oscar for her Bond contribution, “Skyfall,” in 2013. She performed the anthemic track at the ceremony, marking her first performance since giving birth just months before.

Smith has made a steady return to performing and releasing new songs following a vocal cord hemorrhage while touring Australia in April. He postponed all remaining May and June tour dates to recover from his surgery, but he has since rescheduled them for this fall. In the interim, Smith has headlined Atlanta’s Music Midtown Festivaland teamed up with “Latch” collaborators Disclosure on the dance duo’s single “Omen.”
