New Year’s Eve, like Valentine’s Day before it, is a fluffy, shamelessly bad movie overstuffed with big stars out for an easy payday. It’s bad enough to see Oscar winners Robert De Niro, Halle Berry and Hilary Swank sully their reputations in this garbage, but somehow it’s worse that Zac Efron is actually pretty good in it. “To me, any movie in which Zac Efron gives the best performance is its own worst enemy,” says Travers.
