The track has been produced by Mumbai-based artist Afterall
New Delhi-bred and Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Niyati Handa has a number of singles already credited to her name. Earlier this year, she released her melancholic pop track “Sohneya” and the new song by singer Shreya Sharma called “Vekh Le,” which came out this week itself, has been written and composed by Handa. Not one to waste time, Handa dropped another fresh track today, the pop offering “For You,” with Mumbai-based producer Afterall.
In this interview with Rolling Stone India, Handa talks about the new song, future plans and more. Read excerpts below:
When did your new song “For You” begin to take shape?
I wrote it around January or February this year and I started talking to Afterall, I’ve known him for a year. He sent me around 10 or 15 instrumental tracks and this was one which I really liked, it was very peppy and soothing. I haven’t ever tried something like that.
What can you tell me about the song specifically and what it’s about?
‘For You’ is a song that is written by observing people around me, especially couples. Every couple fights and then you care for each other and love each other. But there are fights. So the song is all about being in a relationship and going through different phases. The song is from the girls’ side.
What was it like collaborating with Afterall?
He has a really cute setup at home, a small studio. So, we used to jam there and sit there and honestly writing and composing comes very naturally to me.
Is there a music video releasing too?
Yes, a visualizer. It is cute and hot at the same time. We have used a lot of red lights and blue lights to give it a very sexy and vibrant vibe.
Do you have plans to perform the song live anytime soon?
I’m waiting for at least six or seven of my originals to come out. Because honestly, I mean, I might be wrong, but I don’t want to be tagged as a cover artist. So, for me, when I am performing on stage I want people to sing my songs. I want to be known for my originals.
What’s next going forward?
I have around 10 more songs, which are already produced. Most of them need some investments, so I’m kind of pushing it to labels and investors.
Are you sticking to just the single game or are you planning on releasing an EP or album?
Of course, I have a plan to release an EP. I know that people still don’t know me in the market. I’m still making a name for myself. I think artists should release an album when they have some good streams, and some good monthly listeners. So, when they release an album, people should know them. That’s what I think. There’s no point releasing so many songs together because your audience will get divided and I don’t want that.
