Hear Norah Jones’ Powerful, Political ‘Flipside’

Norah Jones has unveiled her new lyric video for “Flipside,” one of the more politically minded tracks on the singer’s upcoming LP Day Breaks.

“I was really affected by the news and everything that’s been going on in the world and in this country over the last couple years. It’s been really volatile and crazy,” Jones said of “Flipside” in a statement. “I was listening to the Les McCann song ‘Compared to What’ a lot and was very much influenced by how grooving and amazing it is but also how it’s very political and it’s just from the gut.”

“Hard times / Fine lines / Moments pass by and I cry,” Jones sings on the dynamic track. “Rewind / Step behind / It’s hard to find the flipside.” On the soaring chorus, Jones lets loose: “I can’t stand when you tell me to get back! / If we’re all free then why does it seem we can’t just be?”

“Flipside” is the second single off Day Breaks, following “Carry On.” The nine-track LP, due out October 7th, features six originals alongside Jones’ covers of tracks by Neil Young (“Don’t Be Denied”), Horace Silver and Duke Ellington. Saxophone legend Wayne Shorter, organist Lonnie Smith and drummer Brian Blade also guest on the LP.

“This new album feels full circle because I’m going back to my early influences,” Jones previously said of Day Breaks in a statement. “After the first record, I drifted away from the piano a little bit. I still played it, but was more inspired to write on guitar. I really loved playing piano on this record.”
