After dropping their debut five-track EP Here To Stay in September last year, Mumbai electronic duo Nothing Anonymous – comprising vocalist Ambika Nayak and keyboardist-producer Nirmit Shah – went on an extensive tour to promote the record. Stops on the road included slots at Bacardi NH7 Weekender Meghalaya (2019) as well as VH1 Supersonic in Pune earlier this year. “There’s not many experiences as magical as performing your tunes live on festival loudspeakers,” says the duo.

The pair are now back with a fresh offering, the shimmery “Waste Away,” released as part of streaming platform JioSaavn’s Artist Originals series. Interestingly the track was one of the first songs Nothing Anonymous wrote when they formed in 2018. Shah says, “Ambika wrote the demo for an impromptu gig, we decided to collaborate. We fleshed out the songwriting and arrangement together.”

“Waste Away” includes heavy synths, a fluid groove as well as Nayak’s versatile vocals wherein she shows off her dreamy harmonies as well as a slick rap section. According to the singer, the lyrics stem from a very vulnerable place. “It’s talking about addiction and a general feeling of being stuck in a loop. Having dealt with this personally, the lyrics are a reflection of real-life experiences,” says Nayak. The pair recorded the track at Shah’s Mumbai studio Fat Cat Productions.

Life in lockdown has seen Shah help with his father’s business while also using his evenings to up his production skills. Nayak on the other hand has been fleshing out solo material under her moniker Kayan.a as well as taking on recording and writing work for ads. Down the road, Nothing Anonymous promises more new music and also has remixes from Here To Stay by various producers coming out soon. “They are currently being finalized and we’re itching to release those,” says the duo.
