“I hope everyone who listens to this song feels inspired, just like we do, to keep pursuing their challenges, dreams, and hopes as long as ‘DSTM’ keeps playing.”—Tsubasa, member of One or Eight

One or Eight is back with a new release offering “DSTM,” a high-energy remix track that samples Rihanna’s hit song “Don’t Stop the Music.” Showcasing their talents in snappy rap, melodic hooks, and hip-hop beats, One or Eight, the eight-piece Japanese boy group mixes the essence of the original with their unique style, produced by the iconic Norwegian record production and songwriting duo, Stargate.
Stargate, who also produced “Don’t Stop the Music,” gives “DSTM” a modern twist, fusing the core ingredients of the former with the electrifying energy of Eight or One. “It was a lot of fun revisiting this song with them,” Stargate says, adding that this fresh new update gives the classic tune a multi-cultural edge. “The fact that One or Eight are Japanese, Rihanna is Bajan, the hook is from Cameroon, and we’re Norwegian just shows that music brings people together.”
The accompanying VFX-driven music video for “DSTM” feels like something straight out of a science-fiction movie. Set in a dystopian future where rapid advancements in technology have stripped music and art of their soul, the video sees the band members embark on a mission “to reclaim music by venturing into parallel worlds.”
“DSTM” comes on the heels of Eight or One’s recent success at the “MTV VMAJ,” where they received the “Upcoming Dance & Vocal Group” award for a promising presence in the music scene. Tsubasa, one of its members, expressing his thoughts on “DSTM,” states, “I was so excited when I first heard the demo for ‘DSTM,’ but was also a little nervous as Rihanna’s ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ is so iconic and loved by fans. I hope everyone who listens to this song feels inspired, just like we do, to keep pursuing their challenges, dreams, and hopes as long as ‘DSTM’ keeps playing.” Stargate, equally thrilled to collaborate with them, praised Eight or One’s talent in reinventing the iconic “Don’t Stop the Music.”
The band One or Eight—consisting of members Mizuki, Neo, Reia, Ryota, Souma, Takeru, Tsubasa, and Yuga—takes its inspiration from a Japanese idiom referring to “All or Nothing,” and is a nod to their daring, unapologetic outlook on life and music. These boys—who go by their motto “Bet on Yourself”—are committed to building a legacy with their songs, creating a sound that celebrates their roots through their lyrics, choreography, and “distinctive streetwear aesthetic.”
The group’s debut performance video for the song “Kawasaki” was an instant sensation, proving their appeal and growing influence. Meanwhile, their maiden single, “Don’t Tell Nobody” quickly climbed to the top spot of the Billboard Japan Heatseekers Songs chart. They cinched worldwide fame when their collaboration with American rapper Big Sean on “Kawasaki (with Big Sean)” peaked at #5 on the U.S. iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap list in December 2024, cementing One or Eight as a global star.
