The one-minute clip gives a glimpse into the gritty, unforgiving world of Uttar Pradesh’s underworld in series produced by Anushka Sharma
Amazon Prime Video recently unveiled the first teaser for its upcoming series Paatal Lok. Starring Neeraj Kabi (Taj Mahal 1989), Gul Panag (The Family Man) and Jaideep Ahlawat (Bard of Blood), the one-minute clip gives a glimpse into the gritty, unforgiving hellscape of Paatal Lok which loosely translates to ‘The Underworld.’
Chaos ensues; there seems to be no haven. A woman feeds a dog in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar as an FIR is lodged for a car stolen from the bus stand. The case isn’t one of petty crime as we see a police officer walk into a crowd of questioning media personnel. Locals slash each other on motorbikes and raise their guns. A lota falls to the ground just as intimation of breaking news flashes on a television screen. A figure flicks out a knife while a technician messes with the lights; a signboard alerts us to the menace of ‘FAKE NEWS.’ The school bell rings as a kid faces the brunt of violence. The cards read out: ‘When hell breaks loose, the merciless, the godless, the lawless…’ This is the infernal suburbia.
The dark thriller is created by Sudip Sharma (Udta Punjab) and produced by actor Anushka Sharma’s Clean Slate Films. Sharma posted the teaser to her Instagram with the caption: “In #PaatalLok, everything has a dark side and everyone has a secret to hide.” Paatal Lok arrives on Amazon Prime Video on May 15th.
