Pankaj Udhas Death: Legendary Ghazal and Playback Singer Dies Aged 72

The singer was widely known for hits such as ‘Na Kajare Ki Dhar’ and ‘Chitthi Aayi Hai’

Legendary singer Pankaj Udhas has died at the age of 72.

The “Chitthi Aayi Hai” singer’s family confirmed the news on Monday, February 26.

“With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padma Shri Pankaj Udhas on February 26 due to a prolonged illness,” read a statement from the Udhas family. 

According to PTI, Udhas died around 11 am at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. The last rites will be performed on Tuesday (February 27).

Udhas kicked off his music career with the release of a ghazal album titled Aahat in 1980. Subsequently, he released several successful albums, including Mukarar in 1981, Tarrannum in 1982, Mehfil in 1983, Pankaj Udhas Live at Royal Albert Hall in 1984, Nayaab in 1985, and Aafreen in 1986.

Following his acclaim as a ghazal artist, he received an invitation from Mahesh Bhatt to contribute his vocals to the film Naam.

Udhas gained widespread recognition for his rendition in the 1986 movie, particularly for the song “Chitthi Aayee Hai,” which quickly became a chart-topper. His talent as a playback singer extended to numerous Hindi films thereafter. With his albums and live performances spanning across the globe, Udhas solidified his reputation as a distinguished vocalist.

In 2006, his contributions to music were honored with the Padma Shri, one of India’s most prestigious civilian awards, further underscoring his remarkable career.
