Parekh & Singh Break Up, To Focus on Solo Projects

Kolkata-origin dream pop duo released their last album ‘The Night Is Clear’ in 2022

Kolkata dream pop duo Parekh & Singh – comprising singer-songwriter Nischay Parekh and drummer-producer Jivraj Singh – have announced they have disbanded and will be “moving on to new and invigorating pursuits.”

The duo – who released albums like Ocean (2016), Science City (2019) and The Night Is Clear (2022) and gained international fame for their song “I Love You Baby, I Love You Doll” – announced via a post on Instagram that they were bidding farewell.

“This message marks the closing of a circle. With it we bid farewell to Parekh & Singh. In the time since the flow of life brought us into each other’s orbits nearly 15 years ago, we have thoroughly enjoyed, and learned from, the stimulating challenge of inventing things together. And it has been humbling and gratifying to have shared our inventions with a wonderfully supportive community,” the duo said in a post.

The duo said that their “interests and ambitions have diverged” but promised that the “music doesn’t stop” even though Parekh & Singh is over. The post adds, “For Jivraj, this means an intensification of study and practice, with a lot more time devoted to his preoccupations. This page will continue sharing any information on his projects.”

Parekh, who recently launched his new solo project TV Dinner with the single “Guessing Games,” is poised to “continue to devote his life to writing songs and telling stories.” Parekh & Singh’s official Instagram page will be taken over by the singer-songwriter for his solo releases.

The post concludes by thanking their fans and listeners. “If you’ve connected with our work in any way, we hope you’ll continue following along. Thank you for being part of this story. It has meant the world to us.”

Parekh & Singh came up a few years after Parekh released his debut album Ocean in 2013 under his own name, with major production credits going to Singh. After a few years of performing under his own name, the duo launched Parekh & Singh in 2015, becoming immediately recognizable for their trippy, reflective indie-pop songs like “Ghost,” “Philosophize” and later on, “Hello,” “Summer Skin” and “Je Suis La Pomme Rouge” and Sleepyhead.”

Coupled with their clean, eye-catching visual aesthetic with suits in solid colors and the affinity for symmetry, Parekh & Singh’s videos like “I Love You Baby, I Love You Doll” in 2016 shot them to international fame, drawing comparisons to film auteur Wes Anderson’s approach to storytelling. Exquisitely framed music videos like “Summer Skin” in 2019 further upped their visual game, drawing a fan following across the world.

Occasionally playing abroad and touring across India, Parekh & Singh played their final show at Lollapalooza India in Mumbai on Jan. 29, 2024.
