Although New Delhi rockers Parikrama have garnered a cult following during their 32-year career, the band has never released an album. Instead, the group has allowed for their music to be bootlegged and distributed for free. Keyboardist Subir Malik says, “We used to frankly get bored in a studio.” Rather than go into a studio, Parikrama has always been the kind of band to perform live. However, Malik says, “People have now been asking for our songs for ages and ages and ages.”

After the passing of their guitarist Sonam Sherpa in 2020, Parikrama has now taken a fresh approach regarding their music. The band has sensed a shift within the music industry and have decided to tap into streaming platforms by recording new and old material that they’ve written. With only three songs in three decades recorded in a studio, Malik informs us that the band is sitting on eight albums worth of songs.

He says, “For the younger audiences and even our current fans, to reach out to them, the market has totally changed. The only way to do that at the present moment is to give them something to go back and listen to.” The keyboardist adds, “Hence the major change is that we can reach out to many more listeners who are already our fans and who are becoming fans. That is the best way right now to record your songs and just put it out there.”

Ahead of their upcoming gig at New Delhi’s Hard Rock Café on March 25th, Parikrama are all set to debut three new tracks: “Life Is Certain,” a yet-to-be-titled one, and a song with the working title “Don’t Be Lonely.” According to Malik, the band is still working on a schedule as to when to release the songs. However, he says, “We’re at least working on releasing one new original every month. That is the target we’ve kept for ourselves.”

Ask Malik if Parikrama will ever consider releasing an album and he says, “I still do not know whether we’ll work on this as an album, but there will definitely be many more formal releases.” However, Malik isn’t opposed to releasing an album and informs us that it still can very well happen. He adds, “We might just do it. But the point is for us to change this stance after 32 years, from only playing our originals live to going to a studio and recording it and now giving it to people on platforms where they can listen and it can reach a bigger audience, especially the younger audience. This is a major change in stance.”

The keyboardist is also quick to point out that it doesn’t feel like 32 years have gone by as the band is still rocking and having a blast when they get together. He says, “This is just the beginning and I’m assuring you that you will see lots more coming.”
