Pete Tong To Tour India This Week

The English dance DJ will return to spin tunes in Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi

Oct 31, 2012

Nicknamed the “Lord of the Dance”, Pete Tong has been the subject who inspired the famous Cockney phrase “It’s all gone Pete Tong”. Although Paul Oakenfold’s coinage may have a downbeat connotation; when English house and electronic dance music DJ Pete Tong comes down to India for a three-city tour, it’s going to be nothing short of top-notch house and EDM.

With the explosion of electronic music this year, 2012 has been one of the biggest years for the electronic dance music (EDM) fans. Just ahead of EDM supergroup Swedish House Mafia’s One Last Tour in Delhi on November 18th, Tong, who has been a BBC Radio 1 programmer for over two decades now, will perform in Delhi, Pune and Mumbai between November 2nd to 4th.

Last year, Tong performed at Goa’s annual EDM festival, Sunburn. This year, Tong will perform as part of Superstar India, organized by Percept Limited and DJ Mag. Superstar India will put the spotlight on local DJs in the country by allowing fans to log on to www.superstarindia.in to register and vote [starting November 15th] for the five best Indian DJs. “Superstar India recognizes that our home-grown talent have worked as tirelessly and are as talented as the international headliners that are visiting India,” says Manuj Agarwal, CEO of Percept Live. “It’s a melting pot of various DJs and we’re popularizing it and launching a voting website with Pete Tong’s tour,” he adds. Agarwal also confirmed that Superstar India will be a regular fixture featuring Indian and international DJs, with the next gig taking place on December 8th in Goa.

Friday night on BBC Radio 1 belongs to the Pete Tong Show, which is known internationally as Essential Selection. Tong has spent two decades at the station, while also working on his own music alongside the likes of EDM DJ Paul Rogers, house producer Steve Mac and dance DJ Dave Spoon. Recently notable remixes with his fellow DJs include “Stylo” by Gorillaz, and “Love Like a Sunset” by French indie rock band Phoenix, and U2’s “Magnificent” with Paul Rogers. Tong remixed songs by pop artists such as Robyn, Madonna, Cheryl Cole, James Blunt and Razorlight with Dave Spoon.

Tong said in an earlier interview when he was in India in 2011, “I’ve been lucky to play all over the world, but Goa in India and Nizhny Novgorod in Russia stand out so far this year. They are two extremes – one a beach in the sun and the other minus 25 degrees!”

Pete Tong will play in Delhi on November 2nd at Kitty Su, in Pune on November 3rd at Miami, Marriot Hotel and Convention Centre, and in Mumbai on November 4th at Turf Club. For more details, log on to www.superstarindia.in
