Indie gig series [and general blessing for the Kolkata music scene] Jamsteady returned after a gap of three weeks to host veteran experimental guitarist Amyt Datta. Best known for his work with Kolkata bands such as alt rockers Skinny Alley and its late-night alter ego, experimental rock band PINKNOISE, Datta performed from his recent album, Pietra Dura, which released last year, as well as his 2013 album Ambiance de Danse.

Accompanied by drummer Dwaipayan Dwai Saha, who presumably followed Datta’s experimental style perfectly by positioning his drumkit’s china cymbal sideways, guitarist Arinjoy Sarkar and bassist Aakash Ganguly. An entirely electric setlist ahead of him, Datta performed to a lot of his own guitar students as well as fans. At times, the guitarist added his own observations and explanations about tracks, turning the gig into a workshop of sorts. But even if you weren’t a musician, Datta’s style of talking about his songs and his own technique as a guitarist is more educational and enlightening than it is boring. Always one to throw in a bait, Datta tagged on covers of The Beatles songs such as “Come Together” and “Norwegian Wood” to improvised versions of his originals “Ambiance de Danse” and “Dance Acoustica.”
