It was an impressive turnout for a mid-week gig at the South Mumbai club, Blue Frog for fusion band ARKA’s debut album launch. Odd time signatures, Hindustani classical alaaps, and fiery improv jams were the order of the day and every member of the band seemed to be in top form. The six-member ARKA founded by Chennai-based kanjira maestro Selva Ganesh includes Gino Banks on drums, Ravichandra Kulur on flute, vocalist Karthik, guitarist Santosh Chandran and Pondicherry-based bassist Mishko M’Ba. For the grand finale, Hindi film vocalist and composer Shankar Mahadevan who was invited as a guest for the launch joined the band for a blazing rendition of his hit “Breathless.”
