With a headline set by Shillong death metallers Plague Throat and four other bands, Guwahati drew a packed crowd

Guwahati flew the metal flag high last week at the second G-Shock Rolling Stone Metal Awards pre-show, held at the somewhat compact pub venue Cheers Crossroads. There was a true range of North East metal on display that pounded on eardrums on February 12th, ranging from headliners, Shillong death metal band Plague Throat and symphonic black/death metal band Lunatic Fringe to deathcore band Jammers Graveyard, prog groove/thrash metal band The Last Theory and folk-infused thrash/death metallers Shades of Retribution.

With a packed house of nearly 150 metalheads at the venue, Assam’s new excise laws prohibiting under-21s from entering the venue meant about 30 young fans had to be turned away at the door. While Jammers Graveyard had one of the best sets of the night, hammering around with deathcore-meets-grindcore influences, Plague Throat remained the big draw of the night. Despite performing with a stand-in bassist – Stevie PK Lyngdoh from prog metalcore band Symphonic Illusions filling in for Iaidon Jyrwa – Plague Throat, who will also perform at the RSMA Delhi pre-show tonight, raised hell with songs such as their recent single “Dominion Breach” and a signature cover of American death metal pioneers Death’s “Crystal Mountain.”
