Formed in late 2012, Mumbai-based funk/nu-disco duo, Saba Azad and Imaad Shah, released their debut EP All Ball last week. Their powerhouse set marked a distinct change in their stage dynamics ”“ they were completely in sync, feeding off each other’s cues to deliver a performance that was close to perfect with Azad’s vocals and Shah’s riffs sharper than they’ve ever been. Juxtaposed with upbeat, electro-funk, their sound too is more coherent, evolving from electro swing to include jazz and nu-disco grooves. Armed with a guitar, synthesizers and relentless energy, the pair packed in a crowd at Mumbai restorbar, Bonobo, on Saturday.

Dirty Jays, a new electronica act, comprising Mumbai-based bassist Stuart Dacosta and drummer Jehangir Jehangir (members of funk band Baycity Lights), had the tiny, terrace venue at capacity point, opening for Madboy/Mink. Their set included funk, distorted loops and vocals that set the pace for Azad and Shah, who until their slot came up, were seen dancing in the crowd to the opening act.

Inspired by a variety of styles and samples, Madboy/Mink managed to create a retro-influenced sound that showed off both Shah’s and Azad’s strengths.  Among the crowd of managers, artists and gig regulars, we also spotted film actor Naseeruddin Shah,  who took time off to cheer for his son Imaad.

Highlights of the night included “Lemonade”, “Taste Your Kiss” off the new EP and “Funkenstein” which features on the compilation album Subterra, released in February by Shah’s first bandmate and childhood friend, Dualist Inquiry’s new label, Dualism Records.
