A much-needed shot in the arm for Kolkata’s metal scene was delivered by What Escapes Me earlier this week, when they took on putting together a launch gig for their debut full-length album Egress Point, three months after its release in April.

As risky as it might have seemed to rent out an indoor auditorium at Kolkata’s Indian Council for Cultural Relations center, the free show drew over 200 attendees. The band propped up visuals on three screens and ploughed through songs off Egress Point, starting with the instrumental opener “Coalesce”. This was their first show on home ground since September last year. While the crowd preferred to stay on their feet at the seated auditorium, What Escapes Me performed songs such as “Maze of Mutual Apocalypse,” “Empty Signs,” “Section 66 Part 5” and their lead single “The Truth of a Lie,” which they came back to perform for an encore.

Kolkata became the third city for the Egress Point promotional gigs which saw stops in Pune and Mumbai earlier this week. Thankfully, the band won’t wait too long for another gig in their home city. Their next one in Kolkata comes on August 26th, on the first date of the multi-city 2Stroke Tour, supporting the comeback of Mumbai alt metal band Goddess Gagged.
