Polish vocalist and composer Anna Maria Jopek will play a series of gigs in India this month. The shows mark the first time that the classically trained jazz musician will be performing in the country.

Jopek, who established herself in the early Aughts, has to her name a number of acclaimed albums such as 2005’s Secret (which featured her unusually sensual take on American rock band No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak”) and the gold-rated live compilation Farat, released in 2003. She has performed alongside a diverse array of iconic musicians ranging from rock icon Sting and multiple Grammy Award-winning jazz veteran Bobby McFerrin to guitar virtuoso Pat Metheny. Her latest album Minione, released last month, is a collaboration with Afro-Cuban artist Gonzalo Rubalcaba.

Jopek has studied both classical piano and jazz at renowned institutions such as Warsaw’s Chopin Academy of Music and Manhattan’s New School. It is difficult, however, to categorize her music as either classical or jazz. Despite Jopek’s international credentials, her Polish roots have left an undeniable mark on the music she composes: while many of her songs are in English, she also has an extensive repertoire of songs in Polish under her belt, and a heavy folk influence is present throughout her catalog.

Jopek is set to kick off her mini-tour of India on March 10th at an invite-only event at QLA in New Delhi. She then heads to Mumbai to host an open workshop and perform at the True School of Music on March 11th, returning to New Delhi to hit the main stage at Holi Moo! Festival on the 13th.
