A collaborative project that was born in 2016 after Anhad Khanna from New Delhi and Tanner Willeford from Durham, North Carolina met at non-profit organization Music Basti, the duo tap into an ethereal electronic fusion sound on their debut album In Other Words.

Willeford points out that it was only following the release of their song “Jiya” (featuring Mumbai-based fusion artist Isheeta Chakrvarty) in 2018 that they began to set aside three months to work on In Other Words. The seven-track record features Chakrvarty on “Jiya II” but also stand-out vocalists such as Kamakshi Khanna, Akanksha Grover, Saptak Chatterjee, guitarist Aditya Balani and more. The duo offer the first glimpse of the album — releasing on August 14th — via “Haari,” featuring Pavithra Chari from fusion duo Shadow & Light.

Willeford describes the song as having a “teleportative quality.” He adds about working with Chari, “I think early on in the writing process, we felt like this airy yet pensive space sounded like a perfect place for Pavithra’s voice to take root. She was spot on with her takes during the recording and the whole process was quick once we got into the studio.” The song also features flautist Vibhor Mathur and tabla player and percussionist Sarthak Pahwa. “In the last section, you can hear not vocals, but tabla carrying the song through the peak. We love doing this in our music, and I think throughout the album you can find several instances in which the lines between instrumentalists and vocalists get blurred,” Willeford adds about the songwriting.

Inspired by the likes of multi-instrumentalist Karsh Kale, tabla artist-producer Talvin Singh and New Delhi electronica duo Midival Punditz, In Other Words draws deep from the Asian underground space, which Khanna calls “undiscovered and underdiscovered.” With this album finally reaching its “final turn towards the destination,” Khanna adds that they’re working with producers and friends for their next project. He adds, “With that, our goal is to really bring back that sense of ‘movement’ which humbling enough, this music truly holds.”
