Premiere: Jaipur’s Bad Trip Symphony Call on DJ Bassworm for Menacing New Song ‘Kaatil’

Rap meets metal-informed bass music in the Rajasthan duo’s first collaboration with the well-traveled DJ-producer

There’s always been a side to Jaipur hip-hop duo Bad Trip Symphony that leans into their metal influences, with producer-rapper Rbbt and fellow rapper BadLuck turning monstrous on the mic. That comes through on their chaotic, bass music-driven new single “Kaatil,” featuring fellow Jaipur-bred DJ-producer Bassworm.

Rbbt – who co-engineered “Kaatil” with DJ Bassworm – says they do love their metal and have a lot in mind when it comes to exploring rap in that zone. “It’s not so much metal but the cinematic drums and the supercharged, dark synth bass work that we had to bring our core metal flavor into our rapping style,” he adds about the song.

Rbbt says they came across Bassworm when the duo performed as the opening act for hip-hop star Dino James at Club Naila in Jaipur last year. “It was total madness and DJ Bassworm was there, playing the same gig. We got linked up from there and we were waiting for the right vibe to hit,” the rapper says. Bassworm, for his part, hails the “experimental spirit” that Bad Trip Symphony bring to their music and says they shared similar music tastes, which made the idea to collaborate an obvious decision.

Written in February this year, “Kaatil” has the fast flow, menacing turns and a bass drop to turn the dancefloor into a moshpit. Bassworm says, “I had this idea to bring electronic bass to an Indian hip-hop song, which I did while working on ‘Kaatil.’ The song’s rap hold strong emotions and so does the electronic beats which I brought into it.”

According to Bad Trip Symphony, “Kaatil” taps into the psyche of a killer “who can only be killed in physical form.” Rbbt adds, “A killer can be killed physically but his psyche and ideology haunt the ages.”
