The Mumbai brutal death metal band go on a sadistic rampage in riffs for their first single off the follow-up to 2017’s ‘Amputheatre’
The opening blast of riffs on “Matriarch” ring in a return to form for Mumbai brutal death metal band Gutslit, who have released the first single off their third album Carnal, releasing July 7th.
After a few years of stabilizing their lineup, the band’s new eight-track album features the return of vocalist Aditya Barve and music written by Los Angeles-based guitarist-composer Prateek Rajagopal. The lineup is completed by founder and bassist Gurdip Singh Narang and drummer Aaron Pinto. The band says in a statement, “‘Matriarch’ explores the concept of Nature vs Nurture, highlighting how external factors can amplify an individual’s predisposition to violence.”
Swift with its sadistic and gory details, the song cuts fast and loose but also marks a more polished and incisive turn for Gutslit, picking up right where they left off with the 2017 album Amputheatre, which featured vocalist Kaushal L.S.
Rajagopal, who is currently in Mumbai on a break from studio time in the U.S., told Rolling Stone India that “Matriarch” hits the spot, while also hyping the yet-to-be released album opener “Son Of Sam.” He adds, “I think what’s cool about it is it’s a good amalgamation of especially mine and Aaron’s influences. It has a really cool riff but most of it is actually songwriting rhythm. It’s not super technical and more groovy. It’s going to be an incredible live track.”
With the album releasing in July, Gutslit will perform at gig series Scarfest’s Freshblood on June 4th in Mumbai and June 11th in Pune. Rajagopal says he’ll be getting on stage at the Mumbai gig to perform a few songs. Shows in Guwahati and Imphal are also in the works next month, with a Bengaluru show confirmed at gig series Spectral Tendencies alongside German metal artist Fountainhead. In July, the band will travel to familiar ground in Czechia, performing at the Obscene Extreme festival.
