Premiere: Nihilus Herald the End Times on ‘Without Grey Matter’

The Bengaluru technical death metallers have been prepping their debut album ‘Borealis’ for release this summer

In their own bleak predictions for the not-so-distant future, Bengaluru tech-death metal band Nihilus have dove deep into catastrophe with their upcoming album Borealis. The nine-track record details everything from invasions to environmental degradation and the “abuse of science” that leads to destructive and divisive tendencies.

The third single off the album, “Without Grey Matter” regards the cerebral side of things. Drummer and vocalist Siddharth Manoharan says, “The track talks about human greed for knowledge and unethical applications of the same to assert dominance over each other.” The song narrates a story about how an outside force is “beckoned towards our world” through transmissions and explorations. Over start-stop rhythms and fliting basslines, Nihilus amp up the chaos and death metal assault on “Without Grey Matter” and how humanity “should’ve prepared for war.”

The rest of the nine-track album, which is due in the summer of 2020, has been in the works for many years. Considering Nihilus was formed in 2010 and has undergone a few personnel changes, guitarist Manu Manjunath says their influences have “widened” and playing techniques have changed as well. He added in a previous interview, “I feel we’re now writing more progressive material than before. Although I personally have to put a conscious effort to continue to have brutal and fast elements.”
