Premiere: Darjeeling Tech-Death Metallers Obliterating Vortex’s Dizzying New Song ‘Transmortal Decimation’

Written during the lockdown, Darjeeling band Obliterating Vortex’s new song “Transmortal Decimation” channels rage and resignation, amid intense, pendulous technical death metal arrangement. Vocalist-guitarist Sailu Rasaily says, “We basically focused on the current situation where COVID-19 started taking over the world and could see many innocent people lose their lives for nothing. So we tried to express it through writing ‘Transmortal Decimation.’”

Leading with blistering drum work right from the opening seconds, Obliterating Vortex unleash a flurry of riffs and growls to go over it, plus a burst of fretwork from Rasaily and Aditya Darnal. “Transmortal Decimation” follows their 2019 single “Fractal Perceptions Rectified,” which was equally weighty in its confounding tech-death blitz.

Rasaily says the motive behind releasing the song was to “reach out to every person who had to face the aftermaths of the pandemic.” The four-member band – Rasaily, Darnal, bassist Abhishek Moktan and drummer Brison Baraily – also added violin and cello portions and choral arrangements. Owing to pandemic related restrictions, Rasaily mentions that it was “a hell of a challenge” to record, and they were biding their time for long. The band recorded guitars, bass, strings and choir section at Sansic Records in Darjeeling, with producer Rohan Chettri behind the boards, while drums were canned at Classic Audio Workstation in Darjeelin with Dipen. “Transmortal Decimation” was mixed and mastered by Debo Sanyal, from theNo Binary and studio Storeroom Co The song is accompanied by a playthrough/performance video shot by Topax Bro.

Up next, the band has already begun recording a new song. Rasaily says, “[It] is just a fragment of an even bigger part we are about to unveil soon. Since the band is celebrating its 10th anniversary next year, there will definitely be a lot more to come in the coming days.”
