The track is off their first collaborative record, ‘Joint Custody’
Bengaluru/Vellore vocalist Arshaq Malik had already proven himself as a rapper on metal band Trash Talk’s genre-bending debut EP Revenge of Meenakshi last year, but turns out he was just getting started. He released his Sci-Fi inspired solo EP Andromeda 2050 last year as well and has now teamed up with Chennai-based producer Deva aka 47K for a hip-hop record called Joint Custody.
The first song written for the seven-track album was “Coming For Your Necks,” a bass-heavy rager featuring quick bars from Malik, including references to moshpits and blast beats and takedown of fame-hungry rappers. “Conceptually, the song is just supposed to be plain aggressive with quick multi-syllable flows, nothing deep about it at all,” Malik says. 47K, part of Chennai crew Elevated Pride, samples singing legend Manna Dey’s “Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai” (from 1955 film Seema, composed by Shankar-Jaikishan), even tossing in a blast beat to time with Malik’s rhymes.
The video shows Malik and 47K at Chennai graffiti crew T3K’s colorful, mural adorned studio space. Shot by filmmakers Srikar Athreya and Srinath Sreekumar, the music video also features dancer Allan Deve. Up next, the duo will take Joint Custody and unreleased material live on April 24th at Leather Bar at the Park Hotel in Chennai.
