While Indo-American metal act The Second Fovea’s debut single “Headshot” from 2021 took aim at bigotry and hate crimes, they took the instrumental route to raise awareness about conserving the oceans for manta rays with a song called “Manta,” released in April this year. “With TSF, it is always going to be songs with a message to raise awareness and bring a positive change in the world,” drummer Priyam Srivastava says.

Now, The Second Fovea – comprising guitarist Naval Katoch in Pennsylvania and Bay Area-based members, drummer Srivastava and synth/keyboardist Soumyadeep Ghoshal – continue to dive further into topics relating to the climate crises. Their third single “The Echoing Habitat” brings a grandiose, aggro and power-packed metal style with help from Mumbai-based vocalist Sunneith Revankar (from Undying Inc and helming singer-songwriter project Shipperman) to talk about “the alarming issue” of plastic pollution in the oceans.

It’s their first song to feature a new vocalist following the exit of their Siliguri-based vocalist Pritam Goswami Adhikary, who left the band due to other commitments. Srivastava says the band began looking for a new voice. “[The song] needed a voice which was aggressive/powerful but also clear-ish to ensure the lyrics are easy to follow,” the drummer adds. Although not a permanent member of the project, Revankar will join The Second Fovea for their next single as well, slated for release in 2023. “Both songs were written with his vocal style/range in mind. Getting him on board was smooth. He connected with the idea of the song and had nothing but awesomeness to add,” Srivastava says.

On “The Echoing Habitat,” Revankar brings his aggressive yet emotive best to lyrics written by Srivastava about the depleting oceans around the world. The vocalist wrote the speech heard in the beginning of the searing song, one that eerily invokes Poseidon and predicts that the “end of man” will come in waves. For the bulk of the lyrics, Srivastava says he was influenced by his trips to destinations such as Maldives, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska and Goa where he says plastic pollution was a commonly seen problem on different scales. “I am a big lover of marine life, especially underwater animals. Their world fascinates me like nothing else. I have been close to bays and an ocean all my life, [in] Bombay, Tampa Bay and now San Francisco Bay area,” the drummer adds. They handed the lyric video duties to Dheeraj Govindraju (from metallers Wired Anxiety with Katoch). Srivastava says, “The only direction I gave him was ‘think underwater.’ Also, I kept him in the loop as I was writing the lyrics of the song… that helped too.”
