Exclusive Premiere: Tamil Artist Siddrth Invokes Dystopia and Heartbreak in ‘Paravaigal’ Video

The Singapore-bred singer-songwriter explores hip-hop, electronic and pop in his latest Tamil-English song

Singapore pop artist Siddrth aka Ramakrishna K dives into a dangerous side of nostaglia in the music video for his reminiscing dream-pop song “Paravaigal.”

The singer-songwriter and producer’s new Tamil and English track arrives on the back of launching his solo project in 2020 with the single “Piranthaen.” The indie artist embarked on making music at the age of 16, drawing from hip-hop, rock, electronic, Indian film music as well as Indian classical. Picking up production at that age on his own, Ramakrishna started off with music for theater productions and poetry jams.

With “Paravaigal” — which translates to “birds” in Tamil — he showcases a refined future-pop sound, seemingly informed by the likes of The Weeknd and Frank Ocean. The escapist yet torturous nature of the song sees the artist singing about finding pleasure from the happy memories of a past relationship, despite the pain it may cause knowing that it’s over. The music video reflects this accurately.

Directed by Shariq Farooqui and featuring surreal, Black Mirror-level VFX by Aditya Manikashetti, Siddrth is enamored by a woman in his grocery shop job and goes back to 2015 when he had love. He visits this through futuristic glasses that he wears over his eyes, being transported back in time to glossy memories.

Siddrth says in a statement, “The song was inspired by the idea of memories existing eternally in a digital world. Much of our past remains in our present, taunting us with the possibility of reliving and experiencing these memories again and again. In reality, nostalgia is merely a drug that keeps us going back for more, losing ourselves completely from the present.”
