When Priya Ragu steps onto the stage, something magical happens. Her presence at the Bacardi NH7 Weekender in Pune on Saturday, December 2, is anticipated to be an electrifying whirlwind of tunes, beats, and emotions.
Who’s Priya Ragu, you ask? Well, she’s not your average singer. Her music is a mix of soulful melodies that get your feet tapping and your heart singing. Songs like “Good Love 2.0” and “Forgot About” are like instant mood lifters—they make you feel happy, nostalgic, and groovy, all at the same time.
But what’s really special about Priya is how she connects with her audience. When she sings, it’s like she’s talking directly to each person in the crowd. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from; her music brings everyone together.
What’s even cooler? Priya’s music is a blend of different cultures. She mixes sounds from all over, blending Western beats with her Tamil roots. This fusion of vibes creates a unique musical experience that’s impossible to resist.
Priya sat down with Rolling Stone India to chat about her upcoming performance, her projects, her life, and the influences behind her music.
What is the one thing you’re most looking forward to during your trip to India?
Since India is a country deeply rooted in music and culture, I’m eager to explore the vibrant music scene and connect with my Indian fans in person!
Are you planning on collaborating or making music with any Indian artists?
There are a few artists I’d like to collaborate with, but I’m just waiting for the right timing.
Which is the one project you’re most proud of?
My debut album, Santhosam, which I only released 3 weeks ago. Still surreal to think that my album is out in the big wide world.
Could you tell us something that people don’t already know about you or your music?
When it comes to my music, I’m really sensitive. I don’t even like to show my friends my unreleased songs.
If you were left alone on an island with just one song installed on your iPod, which one would it be?
School me like that. It will always remind me of me taking that leap of faith in 2017.
Have you tuned to any Indian or Punjabi music? Do you have any favorites?
There are too many.. I am a huge fan of Santhosh Narayanan, Dhee, Deva, Pradeep Kumar, Arijit Singh and many more.
Which is the one thing about the NH7 Weekender that you are most excited for?
The crowd—it’s the first time I am performing for an Indian crowd, so it’s going to be super special for me.
What can we expect from your set at the event?
Good music and loads of fun. It will definitely be a night to remember!
Could you tell us a little about your Tamil roots and how you ended up in Switzerland from Sri Lanka?
My parents immigrated from Sri Lanka to Switzerland in the early 1980s. They always made an effort to instill in us a strong sense of our culture and tradition. At home, we spoke Tamil, and they ensured that we stayed connected to our roots despite being in a new and different environment. Their commitment to preserving our heritage has been a significant and cherished part of my upbringing, and I am grateful for the rich cultural background they imparted to me.
We’d love to know about your experience working with your father.
When I was 10 years old, I had the amazing opportunity to be a part of my father’s band. It was a truly special experience for me to see my dad in his element, renting a rehearsal room, organizing everything, and selecting the songs. Since I couldn’t read Tamil, my father wrote down the lyrics in English for me, allowing me to fully participate in the music. These memories hold a special place in my heart, and they continue to inspire my passion for music and performance.
We’ve heard that your parents were strictly against Western music. How was that experience? How’d you manage to come out of that situation?
While my parents were strict about Western music, I found ways to listen to it when they were out. I always aimed to be the well-behaved child they hoped for, but music was something I couldn’t let go of. Despite their rules, my love for music persisted, and I continued to pursue it. This inner passion for music has remained a significant part of my life, defining an important aspect of who I am.
Please state some influences behind your music.
My influences include a mix of Western and Eastern musical styles, as well as diverse genres that resonate with me on a personal level. From A.R Rahman, Deva, Illayarajah, to Alicia Keys, Lauryn, The Roots, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce and many more.
A message for your fans from India.
Dear India, I hope my music brings you joy, inspiration, and a sense of belonging. Stay tuned for more exciting projects, and I can’t wait to meet you all in person during my trip to India. Until then, keep spreading love and positivity!
