The five-track record materialized out of the artist’s bedroom studio
When Mumbai producer Nirvik Gill – who goes by his first name – heard electronica artists such as Armin van Buuren and Deadmau5 in 2013, it struck a chord with him. He soon grew curious about the genre and began learning music production with the help of YouTube tutorials. Soon he found himself uploading tunes to Soundcloud under the moniker 0swald. He says, “This was my initiation into the world of music, just natural attraction.” Over the years, Nirvik picked up the guitar and synthesizer and is now out with his five-track debut EP Mumbai Darshan.
Throughout the new record, the producer dabbles with ambient and chilled out sonic elements while also incorporating voice samples. There’s wistfulness (“Hoping/Wishing”), a lo-fi approach (“Stoner Symptoms?”), dancey electronic vibes (“Video Games”), the guitar-led “Chai/Tea” and a synth leaning record closer “Under My Building.” Nirvik says, “Mumbai Darshan is an expression of the emotions and feelings that are aroused when I reminisce about life in my hometown.” He adds, “From video games on the old PlayStation to time spent on the swing under my building. This EP is nostalgic of my boyhood.” The artist recorded the EP at his bedroom studio and also mixed and mastered it himself.
Currently, Nirvik is pursuing mechanical engineering at Manipal Institute of Technology where he’s been able to showcase his artistry. While he’s determined to perform live soon, there are also a few new singles and collaborations in the works. He says, “If all goes well, I hope to carve out a full-time career in music.”
