The event takes place on February 29th and March 1st at the city’s Mahalakshmi Lawns
What started off as an idea to host a campus event in Jalandhar took off into a full-fledged Punjabi music festival in 2016 called Crossblade. Organized by event company EYP Creations in Chandigarh in its inaugural year and traveling to New Delhi and Jaipur, the two-day fest makes its way to Pune’s Mahalakshmi Lawns on February 29th and March 1st.
Ask EYP Creations founder Nikhil Dwivedi on how the thought to put together a Punjabi music festival came about and he says, “We went to various music festivals. I visited Amsterdam Music Festival; I visited various other music festivals within India also. After doing research, we realized that there are festivals of all genres but no festival related to Punjabi music.”
The lineup for the Pune edition includes Ahmedabad-bred singer-songwriter Darshan Raval, Indo-Canadian Punjabi playback singer Jazzy B, Indo-Kiwi vocalist Shirley Setia, singer Dhvani Bhanushali, Ludhiana artist Prabh Gill and more. “This year we are growing it [Crossblade] more. We increased the production level and performance level. Crossblade’s USP is that all the artists don’t perform the same set that they usually do. Every artist creates a new set for this festival,” says Dwivedi.
Apart from the music at the festival, attendees can indulge in the Punjabi cuisine on offer, click pictures at installations which range from tractors to trucks and soak in the all Punjabi décor. Dwivedi says, “Even if you talk of the stage also, the kind of graphics we play, the kind of environment we created is totally Punjabi. You will find lots of things that people can connect with Punjab. It’s not only about music, people want to [also] explore Punjab.”
The festival organizer tells us that they’ve recently kicked off Crossblade Live which is a digital music series. In the works is also Crossblade Originals, a platform for fresh talent across India to release their music. Looking ahead, Dwivedi says, “Punjabi music is not regional anymore, it’s international.”
