The last time we spoke to Pune rockers Purple Patch was in 2020 for their acoustic rock track “Hey Girl!” Since then, the band – comprising vocalist-guitarist/bassist Darryl Paul, vocalist-keyboardist Habib Khan and drummer Shubham S Chand – have gone on to release a slew of singles. Now, the band have recently dropped their latest piece of work, a sleek new rock track called “Play.”
Paul says, “’Play’ was written in 2019; back then, during its infancy, I pictured it to be something of a heavy pop ballad while writing it, although due to the lockdown situation we didn’t end up recording it, which was a blessing in disguise we could say.” The version of “Play” that’s been released is groovy, has plenty of guitar embellishments, big drums as well as a moody vocal texture. “We wanted a chic, modish energy,” says the singer.
The vocalist adds, “This song is about yearning, hankering for the girl you love – the one you’ve always dreamt about being playful with. It’s a conversation with your inner self [the devil inside] having the desire call, for her games. Overall, this song feels like a chilled, dance pop-rock song, seeking out the playful moments and appetite for being in love.” Purple Patch also teamed up with Goa-based model Anamika Sulaiman for the artwork for the song.
“Play” is also set to be the first single off Purple Patch’s forthcoming EP that will include pop-sounding tracks while keeping their rock roots in check. “Right now, the band is in transition, we are exploring modern sounds and being playful with different ideas rather than sticking to one,” Paul says.
