‘Raat Jawaan Hai’: OAFF, Savera and Nikhita Gandhi Bring Cheer on the Title Track

The new series gets a indie rock-powered song by the composer-singers, plus lyricist Ginny Diwan

Singer-composer Savera, composer-producer OAFF and pop artist Nikhita Gandhi draw from stories of everlasting friendship for “Raat Jawaan Hai,” the vibrant title track from the comedy-drama series that hit Sony Liv today, Oct. 11, 2024.

Savera credits the series director Sumeet Vyas and writer Khyati Anand-Puthran for guiding them along the way to create “Raat Jawaan Hai.” The artist adds, “They painted such a detailed picture of childhood ‘chaddi buddy’ friendships.”

It helped that both Savera and OAFF aka Kabeer Kathpalia have been friends right from adolescence, which made the series makers’ inputs even easier to draw from. Kathpalia says after having an initial conversation with Vyas about the song’s role in the series as the opening track, he got to understand that they were writing a song around the enduring friendships between characters in Raat Jawaan Hai, now aided by lyricist Ginny Diwan.

Kathpalia adds, “We wanted the song to evoke a nostalgic yet fresh vibe, so we gravitated toward an indie rock sound, something in that realm. Personally, I really like that style, and we drew inspiration from bands like Vampire Weekend and others with a similar vibe. The song has a more band-driven feel with guitars and drums, rather than a typical pop track.”

Written in Goa during OAFF and Savera’s oft-occurring songwriting camps, Kathpalia recalls sharing ideas with the series director Vyas but they “hadn’t quite nailed it.” The composer-producer adds, “One night, after several attempts, Savera and I sat down with a guitar and started playing around with ideas. That’s when the hook for ‘Raat Jawaan Hai’ came to us. We got excited and decided to FaceTime Sumeet to play it for him because there’s something powerful about performing a song acoustically — just a guitar — especially when someone is hearing it for the first time. We wanted to make sure it resonated, and that’s how we finally landed on the chorus.”
