Raga and DG Immortals Run Riot on New Song ‘Kheench Maari’
“We’ve been raging for a long, long time,” Raga says about his latest collaboration, the first track off his ‘Midtown Madness’ EP
Rappers Raga and DG Immortals are the wrong ones to mess with, as they prove on their high-energy rager of a song “Kheench Maari,” the first track off Raga’s upcoming EP Midtown Madness via Def Jam India.
The pair – who had worked on DG Immortals’ hit Haryanvi rap song “Kaleshi Chori” to kick off 2023 – close the year with the aggro rap track produced by Nitin Randhawa and a street racing-inspired music video directed by Azar Strato. Ask New Delhi rapper Raga what “Kaleshi Chori” and “Kheench Maari” have in common and he says it’s about constructing a “simple and catchy” hook for both songs. He adds, “We wanted both songs to be easy for listeners to hold on to. The difference is that ‘Kheench Maari’ verses itself are a little more complex in their writing and cater to a slightly different audience. We hadn’t planned this start of the year and end of the year situation, it’s just how things aligned themselves eventually and we’re thankful for it.”
DG Immortals added in a prior statement about the collaboration, calling “Kheench Maari” a very powerful song that the duo channeled “pure Haryanvi desi gangsta vibes” towards. He adds, “With this track, we brought in the third wave of Haryanvi hip-hop and give justice to the emerging hip-hop scenes in Haryana. After ‘Kaleshi Chori,’ people really wanted us to collab again, so here we are presenting a new track to our fans. I hope they give lots of love and enjoy this track.”
The song starts off with arcade-style video game synth blips, which make way for a bass-heavy banger that’s sure to start up moshpits. Raga says he’d heard Randhawa’s original beat and asked him to set it aside until he sat down with DG. “I knew that DG and I can really do justice to this beat. It took DG only 14 minutes to finish up and deliver his verse on the track,” Raga says. Add another 15 minutes on the clock and the pair had the hook ready as well, matching the overall energy.
Raga says the music had been waiting to be put out because they’ve been “raging for a long, long time.” He adds, “[I] always loved metal, growling, grunge and genres of that nature. You couple that with what the Nitin brought to the table with this phonk beat and the raging just comes naturally with the flow.”
The rapper says one can expect more “bangers and ragers” from Midtown Madness. “The EP showcases the street character that some relate to and others have definitely seen around – they do want their confidence but not that life. Every track hits on a slightly different facet of this character. I’m explicit about some uncomfortable truths and aspirations associated with this character that many hide or only express behind closed doors,” he adds about the upcoming release.
