Singer-Songwriter Ramya Pothuri Plots House Gigs to Promote Debut EP

When Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Ramya Pothuri was putting together the tour for her debut EP We Never Left, she knew she didn’t want to launch it to a noisy, distracted audience. Explains the 19-year-old, “The music I make is so intimate, I planned on renting a venue and doing a normal launch gig. But then I thought it would be really cool if I could actually get people who can lend their houses, two or three other musicians on board for each house and do three house gigs.”

Pothuri will now take We Never Left live as part of ”˜The Living Room Tour’, with three gigs through the month. She will be hopping from one ”˜non venue’ to another, from the homes of co-producers Ronit Sarkar (aka Awkward Bong) and Rishi Bradoo (from punk trio Blek) to Mahim’s vinyl hub The Revolver Club.

The singer-songwriter has also brought on board a number of city-based artists to her support at these intimate shows — indie rock project Short Round, blues/rock act The Tripp and singer-songwriters Vernon Noronha and Mali. Says Pothuri, “My music is meant more for a small room than a big room; I got help from my friends.”

Released earlier this month, We Never Left is a tinkling acoustic compilation which captures some of Pothuri’s most intimate sentiments. She explains, “All the songs are based on personal experiences in my life and they all have stories to them. I tried to make them as raw as possible and emotional.” But despite the personal nature of the whole project, The Living Room Tour is still a group initiative for Pothuri: “I got help from my friends Ronit and Rishi in planning the tour. It’s a community effort.”
