Rapper and songwriter Jack’ Styles aka Roshan Adam Afzal rounds off his year with an uplifting, self-affirming song about karma, called “Boomerang.” The Chennai artist taps producer 4AM aka Nirupan Chakaravarthy for shimmering, slick beats and calls in New Delhi singer Nivé aka Nivedita Lakra for a bridge section.
On the quick-paced, shiny three-minute track, Styles employs his distinct baritone and adds a bit of gruffness to his vocals, referencing everything from cricket to cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. He touches upon his multicultural identity as well, with lines such as “Believe like a Christian/I’m speaking to Christ/But I’m legally Muslim.”
Released via Chennai artist platform Kulture Invasion, “Boomerang” is described as a song that “revolves around the theory of karma conveying that our destiny is in our own hands.” The statement released with the song adds, “The choices one make is them deciding how their future lives will play out. A former version of you reappears and breaks your heart in the exact same way that you broke someone else’s. You get to experience being the offender and the offended. You come full circle.”
Styles goes from confrontational to reflective in the course of three minutes, seeking inner strength and zooming out to find a world-wise perspective. The song arrives on the back of several projects that Styles has been a part of throughout 2021, including “Karma II,” “Thala Tribute Track” with composer Allan Preetham, “Preach” with Quazi Mode and Skipster and a remix by producer Saivite of his 2020 song “Cigarette.”
