Around the globe, World Record Store Day ”“ held on April 22nd this year ”“ is that one day the hipsters and record collectors get to gloat about just why analog listening rules. In its 10th year, Record Store Day ”“ which usually involves a ton of exclusive vinyl-only releases from record labels and indie artists to showcase the importance of the medium as well as independent record stores ”“ will be celebrated in India, courtesy of online audio retailers The Revolver Club.

They’re tying up with Sony Music India to bring in about 3,000 LPs for sale at events in Mumbai’s Title Waves, Bengaluru’s The Humming Tree and The Piano Man Jazz Club in New Delhi. The Revolver Club co-owner Manu Trivedi says, “It’s to show the sheer breadth of music available on vinyl. An event like this is needed to kickstart the market, otherwise people will stay tentative about buying vinyl and turntables.”

With discounts and used records sold at marked-down prices along with brand-new titles, the tri-city event also encourages record trading. The Mumbai edition ”“ which kicks off at bookstore Title Waves ”“ features talks by collectors such as Dr. Suresh Chandavankar, Rolling Stone India contributing editor Sunil Sampat and Eddie Tauro, quizzes (by retro FM station Radio Nasha) and acoustic sets by singer-songwriters Mali, Tejas and Ankur Tewari. The afterparty in Mumbai heads to Bonobo, featuring Norwegian DJ Bjorn Torske and more.

The Revolver Club’s pop-up store sets up in New Delhi and Bengaluru as well, with the Humming Tree also including a listening session with psych rockers Parvaaz, who later take the stage for a performance alongside Mumbai alt rockers Spud in the Box. The Piano Man Jazz Club will host listening sessions, documentary screenings and performances by jazz/funk act Afterglow and singer-songwriter Reuben Cheriyan.
