South Korean Group Red Velvet to Perform in North Korea

The five-member K-pop girl group will be joined by several other distinguished artists from their country on the trip to Pyongyang

In a move to continue working towards peace and possible denuclearization, South Korea will reportedly send a troupe of musicians, staff and reporters to North Korea to conduct two rare concerts.

The announcement comes after North and South Korea’s meeting at a border village yesterday to improve relations following the show of goodwill during the recent Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The event had seen North Korea send over a host of their own artists to perform, including their only all-female pop group Moranbong Band.

The 160-member troupe from South Korea will feature popular girl group Red Velvet, Girls Generation’s Seohyun, pop singers Cho Yong-pil, Lee Sunhee and more. Veteran artist Choi Jin Hee, who was the last pop singer to perform in North Korea in 2005, will also be part of the lineup. According to reports, the two Koreas were unable to decide on which songs the artists would be performing but will continue negotiations over a cross-border communication channel.

A South Korean inspection team will visit Pyongyang from Thursday to Saturday, the MOU said, to discuss stage conditions, equipment and other installations necessary for the shows.

The artists will perform two concerts in Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital, during a visit that will span from March 31st to April 3rd.
