Reggae Rajahs

The Reggae Rajahs have more in common with reggae legend, Bob Marley, than the genre. Next month, the Delhi-based soundsystem completes four years around the same time as Marley’s 68th birth anniversary. As part of the week-long celebrations, the reggae trio has planned a four-city tour with Polish DJ duo, Dreadsquad. “We regularly perform on Dreadsquad riddims at our shows, so it will be great to get a chance to perform with him live,” says Raghav ”˜Diggy’ Dang, one-third of the Reggae Rajahs. The four city tour in Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai will also feature another Polish artist ”” DJ, producer, and vocalist Kasia Malenda ”” who has collaborated with Dreadsquad occasionally.

Besides Dang, the trio also includes Zorawar Shukla aka Mr. Herbalist and Mohammed S. Abood aka DJ MoCity and are no strangers to collaborations, having toured in Europe last year, and collaborated with dub and reggae artists such as Subatomic Sound, Mr. Williamz, Apache Indian, Soom T, Scotland’s Mungo’s Hi Fi and Germany’s Blessed Love among others. Ahead of their tour, Reggae Rajahs have released a new mix, featuring 28 tracks that cover roots reggae, rock, ska and dancehall. “The mix includes a selection of a lot the big tunes we’ve been playing at our sets over the last year. It’s also quite special as it contains tracks by artists we have met or toured with in 2012. Many of these artists recorded exclusive tracks/ dubplates that can be played only by us,” says Dang, adding that the mix features five previously unreleased dubplates.

The special anniversary mix also features a version of “Mr Big Stuff,” the 1971 classic by Jean Knight, by The Ska Vengers [Dang’s other project]. “The song has lyrical references to the rich and pompous people that we sometimes encounter living in Delhi. Our mix includes a dubplate by Soom T on the Ska Vengers’ production of the song,” he says, adding that their plans for this year will see them come back with fresh tunes, a new set and a lot more entertainment. Dang says, “We are looking to bring more international artists, DJs, and include dancers on stage.”
