Rolling Stone India Pitch: Arsenal Pick Up First Win at Old Trafford In the League Since 2006
Elsewhere, Gareth Bale scored his first Tottenham Hotspur goal upon returning to the club from Real Madrid earlier this year
Matchday seven of the Premier League saw Arsenal inflict Manchester United’s third home defeat of the season while the rest of the so-called “big six” Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham picked up wins.
It’s been 14 years since Arsenal went to Old Trafford and won in the league. This past weekend the Gunners broke that hoodoo by picking up a 1-0 win at the Theatre of Dreams courtesy of a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang penalty. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta out tacted United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær for the majority of the match and the defeat now leaves the Red Devils 15th in the table. Arteta said after the game, “I’m delighted because we played with a lot of courage and big personality.”
Around the grounds, Chelsea picked up a comfortable 3-0 win at Turf Moor against Burnley with goals from Hakim Ziyech, Kurt Zouma and Timo Werner. At Anfield, Liverpool won 2-1 for the second game in a row after going a goal down to West Ham United early in the match. The win meant that the champions now sit top of the league with 16 points from seven games.
Liverpool’s title rivals Manchester City won 1-0 away from home at Sheffield United while Tottenham Hotspur picked up a 2-1 home win versus Brighton. Spurs’ prodigal son Gareth Bale scored the winner in the game, his first goal for the club since he returned earlier this year after seven years at Real Madrid. On Bale’s contribution to his side’s win, manager Jose Mourinho said, “We are using the Europa League matches to improve his condition and today he scored a winning goal, which is a great feeling for the team. It’s also a great feeling for the fans because Tottenham fans love Gareth.”
Matchday eight of the Premier League will see Everton host Manchester United, Chelsea play Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge, Tottenham Hotspur travel to West Brom, Aston Villa take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium and title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool go head to head at the Etihad Stadium.
