Rolling Stone India Pitch: Can Leicester City Seal A Top 4 Spot This Season?

The Foxes currently sit in second place in the Premier League

Matchday 14 of the Premier League saw Liverpool remain undefeated while Tottenham Hotspur won 3-2 for the second league game in a row. Chelsea lost to West Ham United; Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United were all held to 2-2 draws. Leicester City, however, got a late winner against Everton and more.

The 2016 Premier League champions Leicester City have been in some form this season. After going down 1-0 to Everton this past weekend, Leicester came back with a goal from striker Jamie Vardy (his 13th of the campaign) and a late winner from forward Kelechi Iheanacho. The win saw Leicester go second in the table with this being their sixth victory in a row. With this sort of form, The Foxes look quite likely to finish in this season’s Top 4.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers told BBC Sport after the game, “The best teams have spirit. This is a team that is so strong together. Kelechi is a wonderful demonstration of someone who trains with a great attitude every day. They allow this team to develop to the level it has been at because they work hard in training.”

The current Premier League champions Manchester City were held to a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United as were Arsenal (under caretaker manager Freddie Ljungberg now) and Manchester United who played Norwich City and Aston Villa respectively. Man City’s draw now sees them 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool. City coach Pep Guardiola told BBC Sport, “We played at a good level. It was not easy because they defended deep. We scored two goals but we also let two in which is disappointing.”

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool look unstoppable at the moment as they picked up yet another victory this past weekend against Brighton. Although Liverpool’s front three didn’t get on the score, it was their star defender Virgil Van Dijk who pitched in with two goals to get the win. With a healthy lead of eight points over second-place Leicester City, The Reds are on course for their first league title since 1990.

Speaking after the game, Klopp said, “It was difficult this game because Brighton are a good football side. They had a lot of possession and we had to work really hard. I loved that the boys were prepared to do that after a busy week.”

Chelsea lost at home to West Ham United 1-0 despite having 19 shots over the course of the game. With this being Chelsea’s second consecutive loss in the league, manager Frank Lampard said, “We were not at our best, that was very clear. We came up below par and that’s something I’ve not had to say much this season. If anything it’s a test for us here and a reality check for us to react very quickly.”

Matchday 15 of the Premier League takes place this midweek as Burnley host Manchester City, Chelsea play Aston Villa at home, Leicester City welcome Watford, Jose Mourinho goes up against his old team Manchester United with Tottenham Hotspur. The Merseyside Derby between Liverpool and Everton will be played at Anfield while Arsenal battle it out with Brighton at the Emirates Stadium and more.
