League leaders Liverpool are currently 13 points clear of second-placed Leicester City
Matchday 20 of the Premier League saw Liverpool continue their winning run while Arsenal lost to Chelsea at home. Both Manchester City and United picked up 2-0 wins, Tottenham was held to a draw by Norwich City, Leicester City won away to West Ham United and more.
This past weekend, Chelsea came from one-nil down at the Emirates Stadium in North London to claim a 2-1 victory with goals from midfielder Jorginho after a howler from Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno and a well rounded off counter-attack finished by striker Tammy Abraham. The loss now sees Arsenal languishing in 12th place only six points ahead of the relegation zone. Arsenal’s new manager Mikel Arteta said after the game, “It was very cruel the way we lost it, in the first half we saw a lot of positives and saw what we are trying to implement. But the way we conceded was disappointing.”
League leaders Liverpool look comfortable at the top of the table after picking up a 1-0 win over Wolves at home. Wolves incidentally did the current European and Club World Cup Champions a massive favor in their pursuit for their first League Title in 30 years after beating Liverpool’s title rivals Manchester City 3-2 on Matchday 19. The Reds now sit comfortably atop the Premier League table 13 points ahead of Leicester City in second place.
Manchester City bounced back from their defeat to Wolves with a 2-0 victory over Brighton. Striker Sergio Aguero and midfielder Kevin De Bruyne both got on the score sheet and City manager Pep Guardiola who picked up his 100th Premier League win said after the game, “When you think about 100 wins in 134 games it is an incredible achievement. It is nice to be alongside these big teams. It means a lot.”
As for City’s rivals Manchester United, they seem to have found some form with two wins in a row most recently a 2-0 victory away to Burnley. United managed to leap over Tottenham Hotspur in the table to fifth position as Spurs dropped points in a 2-2 draw to Norwich City. Spurs coach Jose Mourinho told Sky Sports, “I have lots of work to do but it has been difficult because I always say you have to try and hide your fragilities. We have to improve defensively because there are too many individual mistakes. That’s very frustrating because we play well and cannot be more offensive than we were in the second half.”
Going into the New Year, Matchday 21 will see Chelsea visit Brighton, Southampton host Tottenham Hotspur, Everton travel to Manchester City, Liverpool play Sheffield United at home, the mouthwatering clash between Arsenal and Manchester United takes place at the Emirates Stadium and more.
