Rolling Stone India Pitch: Lampard Gets One Over Mourinho Again

Matchday 27 of the Premier League saw Chelsea manager Frank Lampard register a win against his previous coach Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham Hotspur team while Manchester City beat Leicester City in a cagy encounter and both Manchester United and Arsenal picked up wins of their own.

This past weekend, Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge with his Spurs side where he achieved tremendous success in two spells as Chelsea manager. Current Chelsea coach, Lampard, who was instrumental in Mourinho’s Chelsea teams of yesteryear managed to pip his former boss with a 2-1 win. Chelsea went ahead with goals from striker Olivier Giroud and full-back Marcos Alonso. A late own goal from Chelsea defender Antonio Rüdiger gave Spurs a consolation. One of the bigger talking points of the game, however, was Spurs’ Giovani Lo Celso’s rash challenge on Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

Although VAR looked at the tackle and decided not to punish Lo Celso they stated after the game that the Spurs player should have been sent off and that they made an incorrect decision. Lampard said, “It is just not good enough. No more to say. To see it afterwards and saying they made a mistake is not good enough. They had a couple of minutes to look at it and got it wrong.”

Saturday’s late kick-off saw Leicester City host Manchester City at the King Power Stadium. The defending champions were put to the test by Leicester with both teams putting up a great fight. However, it was Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus who came off the bench to score the only goal in the game 10 minutes before full time. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said after the game, “Leicester are a top side. It was a good performance. We didn’t give up and that’s an incredibly good sign for us.”

On Sunday, Manchester United picked up a 3-0 win against Watford while Arsenal won 3-2 against Everton which now sees both teams move up to fifth and ninth respectively in the Premier League table. Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s brace over Everton now sees him as joint top goalscorer with Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, on 17 for the season.

Later tonight league leaders Liverpool will host West Ham United. A win will see The Reds go 22 points clear at the top from second-placed Manchester City and take them closer to their first league title in 30 years.

Matchday 28 will see Bournemouth host Chelsea, Liverpool travel to Watford, Everton take on Manchester United at Goodison Park, Tottenham Hotspur play Wolves at home and more.
