Rolling Stone India Pitch: Manchester United Put a Dent to Manchester City’s Title Hopes

Matchday 16 of the Premier League saw Liverpool continue their winning run while Chelsea lost to Everton 3-1. Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur ran away 5-0 winners against Burnley, Manchester United beat arch-rivals Manchester City on their own patch, Leicester City picked up another victory and more.

This past weekend, Manchester United displayed a fine performance against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. United went on to beat City 2-1 which meant that the champions are now 14 points behind league leaders Liverpool. Goals for United came from a Marcus Rashford penalty and an Anthony Martial strike in the first half. City replied late in the game through a Nicolas Otamendi header.

About the title race, City manager Pep Guardiola said after the game, “We have to try to continue; there are many things to play for. It’s difficult because the opponents [Liverpool] are on an incredible run, winning 15 games out of 16.”

As for Liverpool, it was just another day in the office. The Reds registered a 3-0 win against Bournemouth. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah all got on the score sheet for Liverpool. Speaking to Match of the Day, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said, “It was a professional performance – controlled, scoring wonderful goals. We didn’t want to make it exciting again, so we wanted to control Bournemouth.”

After signing a new contract which will see him at the club until 2025, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers saw his team register a 4-1 win against Aston Villa. The Foxes are now six points clear of Manchester City in second place and it’s looking more likely that they might finish in the Top 4 once again since they last won the league in 2016. Striker Jamie Vardy also scored twice in the game which puts him as top goal scorer of the campaign so far with 16 goals.

Chelsea suffered a 3-1 defeat to Everton who are now under the leadership of caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson, Arsenal picked up their first win in two months with a 3-1 win over West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur put five past Burnley. Spurs forward Son Heung-min scored a brilliant solo goal in the game. “I think it is the best goal in my life,” he said after the match.

Matchday 17 of the Premier League takes place this weekend as league leaders Liverpool host Watford, Chelsea take on Bournemouth, Everton travel to Old Trafford to play Manchester United, Wolves go up against Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal battle it out with Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium and more.
