Rolling Stone India Pitch: Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min Bags 4 Goals

Matchday two saw free-scoring Tottenham Hotspur and Everton breeze past Southampton and West Brom respectively, Leeds United involved in another thriller, defending champions Liverpool rolling over 10-man Chelsea and more.

It was the Harry Kane and Son Heung-min show as Spurs smacked Southampton 5-2 at St. Mary’s. The South Korean forward had a field day in front of the goal, scoring four and being set up by Kane on each occasion. The England striker even went on to score one for himself in the victory. “It’s incredible to score four goals in the Premier League, it’s a big honor,” said Son. He added, “I wouldn’t have scored four goals without this guy (Kane). He’s amazing.”

This past weekend, Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton hosted Slaven Bilić’s West Brom. The Merseyside club – who picked up a win against Tottenham last week – continued their fine form with striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring a hattrick and star signing James Rodríguez announcing himself to the Goodison Park faithful with a goal and controlled performance in the 5-2 win. West Brom did go a man down with Kieran Gibbs being sent off late in the first half after which coach Bilić too was shown red for getting into the referee’s ear.

The Baggies manager said after the game about his sending off, “It’s not like the game was going on, it was half-time – nobody was around. I didn’t swear. I asked him in a frustrated way, but I didn’t go over the line. But he just ignored me and gave me red.” He added, “As a manager, you have that right if you are not crossing the line. I told him if you want to kill us, kill us. That’s all.”

Big-spending Chelsea took on Liverpool at Stamford Bridge as they looked to halt the champions in their pursuit for a consecutive title. However, things didn’t go as planned when defender Andreas Christensen took down winger Sadio Mané who had a goal-scoring opportunity. After first showing a yellow card, the referee overruled his decision with help from the touchline monitor and awarded Christensen a red. Mané went on to score a brace in the second half including one where he forced Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga into an error.

Both Manchester clubs opened their campaigns this past weekend. United hosted Crystal Palace at Old Trafford and was handed a 3-1 defeat by the London club. City on the other hand traveled to Wolves and picked up a 3-1 victory for themselves. Other results included Leeds United winning 4-3 against Fulham, Arsenal just about pipping West Ham United to a 2-1 win and Leicester City running away 4-2 winners versus Burnley.

Matchday three of the Premier League will see Arsenal travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool, Brighton host Manchester United, Chelsea go to West Brom, Tottenham Hotspur welcome Newcastle United, Manchester City take on Leicester City and more.
