Rolling Stone India Pitch: Watford Stun Liverpool

The Reds’ unbeaten 44 game run came to an end this past weekend

Matchday 28 of the Premier League saw Liverpool’s unbeaten run come to an end against Watford while Wolves got the better of Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea and Manchester United both dropped points as they were held to draws.

After going 44 games without defeat, league leaders Liverpool were brought to their knees as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Watford. Goals for Watford came through a brace from Ismaïla Sarr and captain Troy Deeney. The defeat came as a relief for Arsenal fans as their 2003/04 team will now remain the only side to have gone through an entire Premier League season without a loss.

Although Liverpool are still on course to claim the title this season, manager Jurgen Klopp said after the game, “They did exactly what they wanted to do, we did not. That’s how football works. You have to accept it, it’s not so easy, but it’s the proof we were not good enough. It’s always very difficult. If you win good, if you lose, try to do it in the right manner and do it like a man.”

Over at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Jose Mourinho’s side lost 3-2 to Wolves who went above Spurs to sixth place in the table after the win. A goal each from Wolves’ Matt Doherty, Diogo Jota and Raúl Jiménez were enough to overcome strikes from Spurs’ Steven Bergwijn and Serge Aurier. Speaking to Match of the Day, Mourinho said, “I think it’s unfair. The players didn’t deserve the defeat. We were punished by, I would say, mentality mistakes.”

Top 4 contenders Chelsea and Manchester United both shared the spoils against Bournemouth and Everton respectively. Frank Lampard’s side was held to a 2-2 draw while Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s team finished 1-1 at Goodison Park.

Matchday 29 will see Liverpool host Bournemouth at Anfield, Arsenal plays West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium, Tottenham Hotspur travel to Burnley, Chelsea take on Everton at home, the Manchester clubs City and United go head to head in the derby and more.
